I am currently on a mission to read through the Bible in a year. My brother-in-law and I decided that it would be a good idea for us to attempt this together for accountability purposes. It is hard for me to stay on track with a daily Bible reading plan without someone to make me feel guilty for being a slacker. (Besides studying for sermon preparation, which is something different.)
Recently, we read through the book of Esther. I had forgotten how much I love that story. It is one of the best stories in all of literature, in my opinion. There's romance, killing, tremendous irony, and heroism galore. I love that story. The best thing about it is that it is a true story. Mordecai and Esther are my heroes.
So, if you're looking for a book of the Bible to read, go and read Esther. It is fabulous. Currently, I'm working through Job. I have a long post coming on that one, I believe. If I can get time to do something of substance.

Good plan! I started to do same this year but am behind...but we have several months left, so going to go for it anyway! You know we did read through the whole Bible 2 years in a row...those were 2 blessed years. It gives SO MUCH insight too when we read it all! I applaud you...in fact, I would give you a standing ovation for even reading in the Old Testament!! You are a rare man in the pulpit these days!! BUT you are in for a big blessing!! We recently learned that when Jesus spoke of being the alpha and omega (Hebrew is aleph and tov) in the NT...he really was telling us (going along with John 1:1) that HIS name is all over the OT too...you probably know the rabbis copied off the aleph and tov in the OT, not understanding what it meant. (Which was never translated into English as they also did not know what to do with it). Well, hubby decided to plug in those words to a computer program he has to see how many times it occurs in the OT...THOUSANDS of times!! And we best sit up and pay attention to where those occur too! If you have a Hebrew copy of the OT you can find them...it has sure made reading the OT a whole lot of fun!! We have never in our lives loved studying the Word as we do now! Blessings on you and KEEP on doing what you are!!

I read through the bible at least once a year, usually more, but never more than thrice a year.
In the book of Acts Paul, using only the Old Testament - reasoned amongst the Jews -all day long- that Jesus was the Messiah.
How many preachers today could demonstrate to a Jew that Jesus was the Christ using only the old testament? How many minutes would it take them to exhaust their knowledge of the Old Testament? Could they identify more than a handful of the prophesies that prove that Jesus is the Christ?
It is encouraging to learn than men still read the whole bible.
